FitFileSize

UPSC photo (CSE, NDA, CDS, CAPF)

JPEG20 KB to 200 KB

UPSC's application portal takes the photograph as a JPEG between 20 KB and 200 KB, the same for every exam. A phone photo is several megabytes, so it is resized and compressed to fit.

Getting a UPSC photo to 20 KB to 200 KB

UPSC now takes one photo for all its exams. You upload it once in the Common Application Form on upsconline.nic.in, and it is used for the Civil Services, NDA, CDS, CAPF, CMS, ESE and the rest. The instructions ask for a passport-size colour photo as a JPEG between 20 KB and 200 KB, on a plain white background, with your face covering at least 75% of the photo and both ear lobes visible.

UPSC sets no pixel size, so this page keeps the photo as large as fits under 200 KB. It reduces the size step by step and stops at the first step that fits. If the result comes out under 20 KB, it is padded up to it with an invisible comment inside the file, so the photo is exactly the same.

Tips

  • Crop close around your head and shoulders before you upload, so your face fills at least 75% of the frame.
  • Don't sign the photo, and don't use one in uniform: the instructions refuse both.
  • The form also takes a live photo with your webcam or phone, and it must match this one. Use a recent photo that looks like you today.
  • The instructions ask for the file to be named photo, so save it as photo.jpg before you upload it.

Requirements from UPSC's instructions for uploading the photo and signature, checked 18 October 2026. Forms change their rules, so check the form itself if something is rejected.

How it works

  1. 1

    Drop your file

Your photo or image. It goes over an encrypted connection and nowhere else.

  2. 2

    Check the settings

This page is set to the UPSC photo (CSE, NDA, CDS, CAPF) rules. Change them only if yours are different.

  3. 3

    Download it

We find the gentlest setting that still fits, and delete everything soon after.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.

What happens to my file?

It is processed on our server and deleted automatically: the original 5 minutes after the run finishes, the compressed file after 10. A file you upload but never compress is deleted within 30 minutes. You can also delete everything right away with Delete now.

Will it look worse?

We try a lossless cleanup first, which does not change how the file looks. Only if that is not enough do we lower image quality, and we pick the gentlest setting that still fits your size.

What if my file cannot get that small?

You get the smallest version we could make and a clear note saying so, instead of a file that silently misses the limit.

Why is my file a little under the limit I picked?

Some sites count a kilobyte as 1000 bytes and others as 1024. We aim under the stricter one, so a 200 KB page aims for 200,000 bytes and the file passes either way.
