Getting Passport Seva documents under 1 MB in total
When you apply for an Indian passport at an embassy or consulate, the Passport Seva applicant portal asks you to upload your documents yourself. The mission guidelines state that each document must be a PDF of at most 1 MB, and that the total of all uploaded documents should be no more than 1 MB. Up to 5 documents can be uploaded, including the photograph and signature, and up to 3 in Upload Supporting Documents.
Since the limit is shared, this page aims each document at 300 KB, so three supporting documents come to 900 KB. A scan of a page or two fits in 300 KB comfortably. We lower the resolution of the scan step by step and keep the first step that fits, so the text stays as readable as the limit allows.
Tips
- Uploading fewer documents? Pick a larger limit under Use a different limit, keeping the total under 1 MB.
- If a document is a photo, save it as a PDF first (most phones can print to PDF), then compress it here.
- The portal allows 12 upload attempts in all, so check each file's size here before you upload it.
- Applying in India instead? The photograph is taken at the Passport Seva Kendra, so no photo upload is needed.
Requirements from the Embassy of India, Bogota: guidelines for uploading photographs, signatures and documents, checked 18 October 2026. Forms change their rules, so check the form itself if something is rejected.

Questions
Is it free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark.
What happens to my file?
It is processed on our server and deleted automatically: the original 5 minutes after the run finishes, the compressed file after 10. A file you upload but never compress is deleted within 30 minutes. You can also delete everything right away with Delete now.
Will it look worse?
We try a lossless cleanup first, which does not change how the file looks. Only if that is not enough do we lower image quality, and we pick the gentlest setting that still fits your size.
What if my file cannot get that small?
You get the smallest version we could make and a clear note saying so, instead of a file that silently misses the limit.
Why is my file a little under the limit I picked?
Some sites count a kilobyte as 1000 bytes and others as 1024. We aim under the stricter one, so a 200 KB page aims for 200,000 bytes and the file passes either way.
